The Truth About Free Estimates – (Why Communication is a Two-Way Street)

We’ve all heard it: “Contractors never call me back.”
It’s a real frustration for many, and we get it — communication matters!  At Fence ’N More Supplies, we pride ourselves on returning calls promptly, answering questions, providing free estimates and DIY instructions. But here’s something not many talk about: communication is a two-way street.

What Goes Into a “Free Estimate”

When you ask us (or any contractor) for an estimate, it’s not just a number we pull out of thin air. Behind every estimate is:

  • Time spent discussing your needs, options, and timelines.
  • For potential installations, travel to your site for measurements (yes, that means fuel costs, vehicle wear, and hours on the road).
  • Careful material take-offs, calculations, and product selection.
  • Data entry into our systems so we can track your project accurately.
  • Cross-checking availability of materials and labour.

We gladly do this because we want you to have the information you need to make the best decision for your investment.

When the Conversation Goes Quiet

We understand — sometimes a project turns out to be more expensive than expected. Or maybe priorities change, another contractor gets the job, or life just gets busy. But when we never hear back after sending an estimate (even after following up), it can be challenging for us to keep our schedule and resources moving efficiently. That time we’ve spent on your project could have been used to help another customer who’s ready to move forward.

What We’re Asking For

What would need to be true for you to commit to getting into our schedule this season? OR  We’re simply asking for a reply — even if it’s just:

  • “Thanks, but it’s out of my budget.”
  • “We’ve decided to wait until next year.”
  • “We went with another contractor.”

If it’s something we said or did that made you feel unsure, please let us know. We value feedback — it helps us improve and serve future customers better.

Why It Matters

Clear communication helps everyone:
Future customers benefit from any lessons learned when people share feedback.
You get a smoother experience and faster answers.
We can plan our resources, schedule projects efficiently, and keep costs under control for all customers.

A free estimate is part of our investment in you. In return, we ask for a simple courtesy: let us know where things stand so we can move forward — whether it’s with your fence or the next customer in line.

At Fence ‘N More Supplies Ltd, our goal is to be transparent, fair, and respectful in every interaction. We believe that’s a two-way commitment and look forward to assisting you with your next fencing project!
